Guide to selling at a UK Christmas market

    By Melinda Hines26th November 2025

As the holiday season approaches, Christmas markets spring up across the UK, offering a magical atmosphere. For small business owners and entrepreneurs, these markets can be an ideal way to connect with customers. You can showcase products and tap into the festive shopping crowd.

But standing out isn’t simple. Success at a Christmas market requires careful planning, an eye for detail, and the ability to create a memorable experience for your customers. It’s essential to approach your stall with a clear strategy to make the most of this seasonal opportunity.

    Choosing the Right Market

Each Christmas market has its own character. You might be looking for a bustling city centre location, or a quieter village green gathering. To make an informed decision, decide on your target audience. For example, if you sell high-end, handcrafted jewellery, a market in a busy shopping district might attract the right crowd. However, if your products are more niche or budget-friendly, a smaller market in a community-focused area could be a better fit.

Do some research on past years’ attendance figures and visitor demographics. Many markets offer different pricing tiers depending on the space and location, so it’s important to match your product and price point with the atmosphere of the event. Don’t forget to think about your stall’s logistics too: consider factors like:

    • Power availability
    • Heating
    • Proximity to the food and drink stalls
    • Lighting, such as LED profiles, to highlight your stall

These subtle yet effective touches can make your display stand out in a sea of twinkling lights.

    Preparing Your Stall & Display

First impressions count, and the more inviting and visually appealing your stall, the more likely you are to attract customers. Make sure your stall is neat and organised. Choose a theme or colour scheme that complements your brand or product. This could be something as simple as sticking to traditional red, green, and gold for a festive feel.

Use eye-catching displays, such as tiered shelves or hanging baskets, to show off your products in a way that makes them easy to browse. Consider lighting carefully, too. The best Christmas markets are often held in the late afternoon or evening, so lighting is key.

    Stock and Pricing

While it’s tempting to bring a little bit of everything, too much choice can overwhelm customers. Instead, curate your selection with a clear focus on what works best for the market and the season. Keep in mind that people are shopping for gifts, so offer items that appeal to a wide range of buyers, like presents and stocking fillers.

Pricing is also critical. In a competitive environment like a Christmas market, you’ll need to be mindful of both your production costs and what customers are willing to spend. Be transparent about your prices and consider offering multi-buy deals or discounts for larger purchases.

    Marketing and Customer Experience

You’ll need to engage customers beyond your product offerings, creating an atmosphere that makes them want to browse and buy. A friendly attitude goes a long way. Smile, greet visitors, and help them without being pushy. Personal engagement can make a huge difference in driving sales.

Another powerful way to enhance the customer experience is by using social media. Create buzz around your market appearance by posting updates and sneak peeks of your products in the lead-up to the event. Use hashtags relevant to the market and location to help potential customers find you.
