Gridlock after road accident close to Southport Nursery School

Police have been alerted to a smash at the junction of Manchester Road and Hawkshead Street.

Just after 2pm this afternoon a silver Renault transit van collided with a hatchback car as one tried to cross the busy junction.

The smaller car is thought to have been totally written off despite the low speed of impact and the bonnet has been destroyed.

The damage to the van is minimal and both drivers however the driver of the car is currently being treated at the scene by paramedics.
