Greyhound racing: March’s big winners

23rd April 2022

In terms of the major Category One finals, March was perhaps the biggest month of the 2022 greyhound racing season yet — with some six big race nights taking place in the latter half of the month, including the Golden Sprint, the Towcester Marathon and the Northern Flat.

Those who wager their greyhound bets on sites like this one: https://www.betdaq.com/exchange/greyhound-racing-100008 would have had plenty to get their teeth stuck into. However, with that many Category One finals, it could be easy to lose track.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look back at some of last month’s big winners. Read on to find out more!

Romford: Golden Sprint – Rail Mccoy

Trained by 12-time Greyhound Trainer of the Year, Rail Mccoy landed a third Golden Sprint title for Mark Wallis.

Taking advantage of a slow exit from the traps from favourite Crossfield Dusty, the dog who had all the backing in the greyhound tips, Rail Mccoy never looked back — going on to win the £10,000 race by a comfortable three and three-quarter lengths.

Monmore: Premier Greyhound Racing Puppy Derby – Deelish Frankie

Patrick Janssens’ name has started to crop up as one that is synonymous with greyhound racing in the UK over the last couple of years, and the Belgian trainer added another major honour to his CV in Monmore’s Puppy Derby.

Having never finished outside the top two in his eight starts, Deelish Frankie looked unstoppable in the midlands — drawing clear to win by six-and-a-half lengths clear of Annual Sydney and Farmers Buster to win the newly enhanced £20,000 prize purse.

Nottingham: British Breeders Stakes – Signet Otis

After a case of so close, yet so far for Signet Otis in his recent Category One finals, with second-place finishes in the British Bred Derby Final in December and the Towcester Blue Riband earlier this year, the Kevin Hutton-trained dog finally prevailed in the British Breeders Stakes at Nottingham.

The two-year-old looked like he was going to breeze home after taking the first bend in the lead, but Locked Down started to challenge down the home stretch and closed in on the January 2020 dog. However, Signet Otis held on to win by half-a-length after the nervy finish.

Signet Goofy, who was from the same litter as the British Breeders Stakes Champion, made sure it was family affair on the night — winning the British Bred Midlands Sprint Trophy Final as he beat Sonic Emjay by just short of two lengths.

Newcastle: Northern Flat – Jaguar Macie

Winner of the Monmore Puppy Derby, the Northern Puppy Derby and the Angel Of The North last year, Jaguar Macie added another Category One success to her résumé in the Northern Flat showpiece at Newcastle.

The North East of England track is proving to be a happy hunting ground for the Graham Rankin-trained April 2019 daughter of Droopys Jet and Droopys Breeze as she took the lead at the second bend and stormed home to a three-and-three-quarter length victory over Mickys Barrett and Droopys Biggy.

“It was a brilliant performance from Jaguar Macie. She’s a real star and hopefully can go on to have another fantastic year,” Newcastle general manager Ian Walton said after the race.
