Sefton Council is set to introduce a series of free parking incentives across the borough over the Christmas period.

In a bid to back local businesses in Sefton, the council is introducing a number of free parking schemes throughout December – similar to last year.

In support of Small Business Saturday, there will be free parking on street and off street across the whole of the borough on Saturday, December 6. This excludes Central 12 in Southport and Formby swimming pool car parks – these are operated by Sefton Council on behalf of their owners.

Further dates for free parking in Southport, Bootle, Crosby and Waterloo over weekends in December have also been announced (see below).

On top of this, Sefton will also make it free to park in its car parks and ‘on-street’ parking spaces after 3pm on Thursday, December 11 and 18 across the whole borough.

The park and ride facility in Southport will also run free of charge on Saturday, December 6, Sunday, December 14 and 21 and after 3pm on Thursday, December 11 and 18 which people are encouraged to use.

It is hoped that people will make the most of the offer in the run up to Christmas to take advantage of the festive atmosphere and enjoy the many facilities and attractions Sefton’s town centres offer – alongside its fantastic retail outlets.

Businesses are being asked to encourage their staff not to fill up the free spaces so as much room as possible will be available for shoppers and visitors.

The concession is expected to cost the council around £26,000 which will be met from a ‘priorities fund’ that has been set aside to support town centres and the local economy.

Cllr John Fairclough, Sefton’s Cabinet Member for Transportation, said: “The aim of this is to give a seasonal shot in the arm for our many local shops and traders.

“Last year we ran a similar scheme which went down really well with businesses and shoppers alike and shows we are committed to giving something back to our town centres during the Christmas period.

“We all understand the need to balance the regulation of parking, to free up spaces and keep trade turning over, versus the cost to the shopper or visitor.

“This will be an added incentive for people to shop in Sefton and also enjoy the fabulous restaurants, bars, coffee shops, theatres, cinemas and other attractions which make our town centres so diverse and interesting.”
