An angry Southport councillor is questioning how the proposal in Sefton Council’s budget to close down all the public toilets ever saw the light of day.
Finance details provided to Southport Lib Dem councillor Tony Dawson show that, in contemplating closing down the vital public loos, the Council had been prepared to write-off £825, 000 of investment – yet these figures were never presented to councillors while the public loo closure proposal was still an active option. The majority of the toilets affected are in the centre of Southport which Councillor Dawson represents.
“This is the economics of the madhouse,” says Councillor Dawson. “The Labour group were not only contemplating a move which would isolate thousands of senior citizens in their homes, unable to go to town for fear of being ‘caught short’. They were also prepared to throw away nearly a million pounds already spent.”
“To stop us ‘spending a penny’, the Council was prepared to secretly throw away 80 million pennies. It hardly gives us confidence in the rest of their spending plans”.
