Five way battle for Birkdale as election candidates unveiled

5th April 2023

Candidates for next month’s local elections have been announced by Sefton Council.

One seat is available in each of the borough’s 22 wards for Sefton Council’s local election on 4 May. 91 election candidates have been announced.

Five candidates have confirmed their intention to stand in Birkdale. The ward is typically a Liberal Democrat stronghold, but Labour secured their first-ever councillor in the area in 2021.

Two councillors have opted to vacate the Council and will not defend their seats: Ainsdale’s Cllr Terry Jones (CON) and Meols’ Cllr Yaso Sathiy (LD).

Labour have held control of Sefton Council since 2011 and it would take a swing of unprecedented proportions to change this. Within the 7 Southport wards, one Conservative seat, two Labour seats and four Liberal Democrat seats will be defended.

Results will be counted at Dunes Leisure Centre shortly after polls close.

Voters will now be required to present photo ID in order to vote. A list of acceptable ID is available on the electoral commission website.
