A coach load of Jake Barton fans set off from the Elite Gym headquarters in Shakespeare Street, Southport, this morning (Saturday 7th July 2012) to watch Jake’s showdown against 4x World Kickboxing Champion Chad ’2 Slick’ Sugden.
Amidst the excitement of the Diamond Jubille and the Olympic Games the Elite Gym Southport are setting up for the own party tonight (Saturday 7th July 2012)in the captial. British Champion Jake Barton has confirmed a huge fight at the O2 arena in London on the 7th July. Barton will go face to face with 4x World Kickboxing Champion Chad ’2 Slick’ Sugden who boasts a kickboxing record of over 76 fights. The fight will be under Pro K1 rules, different to Barton’s usual Muay Thai rules. However, coaches Phil Barton and Andy Brocklebank believe Barton will adapt well to K1 rules and will play to his strengths. This is to date the biggest fight of Bartons young career, and the fight will be under the watchful eye of the ‘Its Showtime’ organisation in Holland, with perhaps something to be offered to the winner. When asked about the fight Barton respects Sugden as a formidable champion, and accepts he will be the underdog going into the fight, having just 14 fights against Sugden’s 70+. However, Barton sees Sugden as a stepping stone to progress his career to the next level. “No one has ever really bitten there gum shield and taken the fight to Chad’ said Barton ‘Im going to go there and give him the fight of his life, I’m going to break his heart”. After leaving college Barton is now in full time training, preparing for this contest and his coaches believe he will be fitter than ever when he climbs into the ring on 7th July. If anyone is interested in watching the fight there will be a coach running from the Elite Gym down to the O2 arena and back on the day.
Following the re birth of K1 to Main Stream television, the Elite Gym are keen to branch out into these rules a long with Muay Thai, in order to show their versatility. Therefore in September, Current Muay Thai European Champion, Kevin Ward will travel to Germany to compete against German opponent Jan Kronschable for a WFCA K1 European Title. Ward is coming off a loss to Dan Edwards on the last ‘Elite Fighting Championships’ in Southport. Although a rematch is on the cards, this has been looked at as an off night for Ward and not effecting his mentality, as he is still one of the Top Super middleweights in Europe. Also on the bill, Goldenbelt K1 North West Area Champion Didzis Musulis competes against a strong up coming German opponent, also under K1 Rules, keeping the ball rolling after his recent title win at ‘Elite Fighting Championships IV’.
The ‘Elite Fighting Championships V’ returns to the Prince of Wales on the 4th November 2012. This time featuring British Champion Jake Barton in an exciting main event to be revealed shortly. Barton says ‘I’m excited already for this, and to top the bill of what is now a prestigious show is an honour. Fighting in front of your home crowd is amazing, I’m always very appreciative of the support I receive from the southport fight fans and look forward to performing for them again’. Promoter Phil Barton has reported ‘We have a few options for Jake, last time out he had a war much to the delight of the crowd. Watch this space as a tasty headliner will be announced in the near future. The Show will also feature 3x Area Champion Didzis Musulis, Steffan Marin, Matt Jones and more Elite Fighters.
Kevin Ward for the first time will miss out on the next ‘Elite Fighting Championships’ how ever it is in order to take a fight with Scotland’s Ally Smith, UKMF Middleweight British Number one. The fight takes place on ‘SuperShowdown 3′ in Glasgow. ‘I’m gutted I’m not fighting on the Southport show’ says Ward ‘however this is a fight we’ve been after for a while and to fight on the undercard of Pound for pound best fighter in the World Saenchai Sor Kingstar is a privilege. Smith is British number one at the weight below me, but also holds his own at my weight so it’s a chance to redeem my last fight proving I’m still up there, at the top’. The fight is hosted on the 11th November.
