Elderly twitchers in a flap over new car park machines

12th February 2020

Elderly twitchers who once enjoyed visiting the RSPB car park in Southport are now being conned out of extra money thanks to new card only pay machines.

Many opportunistic bird watchers hoping to catch a glimpse of a rare gull along the Marshside marshland have been turned away or forced to park miles from their destination because the pay machines will not take cash.

It’s thought an official complaint has now been raised with the RSPB following complaints about the initial installation of the machine

Local resident Mrs Carpostophilous said: “I think it’s terrible. I have parked there with my mother for years to watch the sea and now we cannot use the space because we don’t carry anything but cash. Are the RSPB biased against older people?”

Fees were introduced through the use of a ‘solar powered’ ticket machine following complaints in May of last year.
