ECJ ruling greeted with anger by MEP

The ruling by the European Court of Justice that the UK can cancel Brexit without the permission of the other 27 EU states has been greeted with anger by local MEP Paul Nuttall.

“This is giving our Parliament the go-ahead to revoke Article 50 and if they seize on this opportunity it will be an act of betrayal beyond words.

“And in a country not given to uprisings I fear it will lead to a rebellion on a scale not seen before. A total of 17.4 million people voted to leave and they will not take such a betrayal lying down,” said Mr Nuttall, North West UKIP Euro-MP.

“Also I am very concerned that the ECJ has written a law, their role is to interpret laws not make them and I find this a worrying direction of travel.

“Democracy within the EU is not the same as it in this country. Most people here don’t realise that EU laws are proposed by an unelected Commission and rubber stamped by the elected Parliament.

“Bureaucrats call the tune over there and it is one of the reasons why the majority voted to leave. Today’s ECJ ruling is another reason why we must leave and regain our independence,” he said.
