‘Don’t panic’ call over new Labour Leader

Labour Party members in Sefton are being urged to not panic in the face of Jeremy Corbyn’s victory in the Labour Leadership election over the more moderate local favourite.

Maghull-born Andy Burnham was thrashed by the veteran hard-liner Corbyn who got more than three times as many votes as Burnham received in the ballot. Southport Labour Candidate Liz Savage was a keen Burnham supporter as were both Bill Esterson and Liverpool Labour Mayor Joe Anderson who wants to take over in Southport too.

The media have already descended in force on Mr Corbyn, on his inability to sing the national anthem at a veterans rally and his past hob-nobbing with IRA leaders Martin McGuiness and Gerry Adams. Now Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson has issued a call for unity in the face of a Tory onslaught on Corbyn.

Mr Esterson said: “Jeremy has a popular mandate and we should respect that. He has the backing of the members and he has my backing as leader of my party. ”
