Doctors say- Avoid DIY & gardening work during coronavirus lockdown to help save lives

4th April 2020

Medical experts are asking everyone to refrain from any DIY or gardening during the coronavirus pandemic. This is because it’s already caused a rise in the number of power tool injuries. This in turn leads to more vital medical resources being diverted away from treating Corvid – 19 related cases.

Records indicate there was a spike in the number of power tool related injuries since lockdown was introduced. Numerous patients have injured themselves after using lawnmowers, chainsaws etc.

Doctors advise that reconstructive surgery can involve countless hours in theatre. These gardening – related accidents can direct precious resources away from very sick patients with coronavirus.

Injuries linked to such DIY include severed fingers, deep cuts and infections. David Warwick, president of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand, said: “Doing gardening and home improvements can offer important mental health and wellbeing benefits during this difficult time. But we need people to ensure they are doing these things safely, to minimise the risk of serious injury and reduce the strain on our NHS.”

Don’t be selfish – help our wonderful NHS staff and save lives

The message is clear – avoid DIY and gardening whilst the coronavirus lockdown is in place – it could help save a life!
