Day Centres in Southport Set to Close

by
2nd January 2015
Day Centres for elderly and disabled residents are being proposed for closure following a consultation process with service users conducted by Sefton Council.
Residents of the Borough have until January 29th 2015 to comment on the proposals which would take place over the next two years. An important part of the changes is a proposed removal of much of the Council-provided transport to the centres with clients being directed to utilise specific benefits for this purpose.
The Day Centres proposed for closure in the Southport area are:
• Brookdale
• Sandbrook Resource Centre
• The Orchards
Those proposed for retention and in some cases possible modernisation and/or new build expansion are:
• Chase Heys
• The Poplars
• Westpark
• Mornington Road
There are other  proposed closures and retentions in Bootle and Crosby.
Sefron Council say that they are finding more and more people want to receive personal payments to give more flexibility in how they meet their needs.rather than be taken to specific services like Day Centres. They also say that many of the buildings that operate ‘day-care’ are underused and therefore costly to run. They are becoming unfit for the purpose they are used for.
