A pensioner says he’s lucky to be alive after he ended up unconscious on Marine Drive when he smashed into an unlit ‘road closed’ sign which had been placed across a pitch-black cyclepath.

Stephen Hunt said he could have been killed as he made his way home to Crossens from Smedley Hydro in Birkdale where he works.

He avoided serious injury even though he was flung from his bike onto the carriageway and ended up in hospital with severe concussion.

The experienced cyclist was on the same route home he has been taking for the last nine years, but claims he had no warning the traffic sign was obstructing the cyclepath and says it shouldn’t have been there at all.

The signs are meant to warn motorists of a road closure further up Marine Drive at the Plough roundabout.
