Councillor welcomes Deaf school development

17th March 2018

Plans have been revealed to ‘restore to glory’ a disused Grade II listed school building in Southport.

Octopus Healthcare Group hopes to create a multi-million pound development of up to 120 extra care apartments and associ- ated facilities including a bistro, residents’ lounge, library and hair and beauty salon at the former Birkdale School for Hearing Impaired Children on Lancaster Road.

An exhibition on the proposed redevelop- ment of the building will be held from 2pm- 7.30pm tomorrow (Thursday, March 15) at the Churchtown Room in Southport Town Hall.

The community consultation is being launched following discussions between Sefton Council and the healthcare group, before applications for planning and Listed Building Consent are submitted to the council’s planning department.

The news has been welcomed by Dukes Ward Councillor David Barton who has been a long-standing campaigner for the restoration of the school.

He said: “It would be a welcome pleasure to see this landmark building here in Birkdale brought back into occupation and restored to its true former glory.

“Considering both the grave need to save this building which has been, up to now, placed upon Sefton’s ‘Heritage At Risk’ Register.”
