Contractors which have been hired to install the the new parking meters in the town have now installed around 2/3 of the parking meters in the town.

The Parking meter contractors have been installing 12 meters a day which mean all the parking meters could be installed very soon.

    Cllr Peter recently Dowd said:

“Car parking isn’t about just  squeezing money out of drivers. It is about us being as  reasonable and as fair as possible in times of severe funding cuts.

We will be introducing the ability for people to be able to pay for their parking tickets by mobile phone and there will be  new pay and display machines rolled out so people can pay using different methods of paying.

We have listened to what people have told us. This is an attempt to make the system more user friendly and  more efficient.

Over the years we haven’t put  charges up in line with other  local authorities.

There has to be a recognition that charging is  going to happen but we are  not going to go down the  route of being too punitive  to drivers, either in terms of  price or in enforcement.

It is trying to balance it out.  If we were just putting charges  p by 50, 60, 70%, people would  have a point, but we are not  doing that. Sefton’s charges will still be competitive with other areas, such as  Knowsley, Liverpool and Preston”
