Community campaigner vows to continue for the benefit of Southport

Community campaigner vows to continue for the benefit of Southport

A councillor who has stepped down from his role on Sefton Council for personal reasons is to continue working to help the people of Southport as a community campaigner.

David Barton represented Dukes Ward for four years after being elected in May 2014 and has achieved a number of major successes with his hard work on behalf of local people and businesses.

They include the major restoration of the town’s civic heritage, especially the Victorian Verandahs and fascia frontages on Lord Street, work to improve the seafront area, campaigns to encourage and support local businesses in addition to many road safety & highways improvements.

Mr Barton, who has lived in Southport all his life, said he cared passionately about the town and its people and would continue to champion them however he could.

He said that although personal reasons had prevented him standing for re-election this time he fully intended to stand in the local elections again in the future.

He said he had been overwhelmed by messages of support from local people who were grateful for the work he had done.

Mr Barton said: “With the support of the local community and through an approach of mutual respect and sincerity we have been able to achieve a great deal for the benefit of the people of Dukes Ward and the town as a whole.

“Although it is unfortunate that I have had to take a step back from being a councillor for the time being, I do not want all the good work and momentum we have built up in affecting change to stop.

“It is my intention to continue using my experience and contacts to support residents and the wider Southport community and to work with them for the benefit of the town as a whole.”
