Clean Sweep for the Greens

Southport hockey
Over the course of the past 8 weeks Southport Hockey have been within touching distance of a clean sweep. 5 wins from 5 games over the course of the weekend is no easy feat. Having said that this past weekend, the club pulled it off for the first time in recent memory.
Mens 1st XI travelled away from home playing against Golborne in a 1st v 3rd top end of the table clash. Liquid hockey in the first half from Southport saw the Seasiders go 4-0 up at half time. After a quick reply from Golborne after the break, all hopes were dashed as Southport put two more past the home side. 6 goals from 5 different goal scorers shows how well this current Southport team is playing. C. Jameson, J. Caton, G. Caton (2), M. Grindrod and B. Taylor all on the scoresheet.
Mens 2nd XI hosted Leyland and Chorley 2s in what was the only home game of the weekend. Similarly to the 1st XI game the Greens blew away the opposition in the first half going into HT 4-0. Goals coming from M. Gray, T. Booth and a M. Kennedy Hat-trick. 3 clean sheets on the bounce for the 2nd XI hitting a good run of form as they top the table heading into week 9.
The Ladies 1st XI also entertained Leyland and Chorley as they took on their 2nd XI. A convincing 7-0 win with goals coming from H. Markland (3) and R. Hughes (4). With each week the Ladies 1st XI seem to be getting stronger and stronger. Markland scoring 9 in two weeks means the girls sit 4th in the table only 3 points behind the table leaders Lytham St Annes.
The Ladies 2nd XI also find themselves in 4th position with 3 points behind the leaders. Last week the girls came away from Garstang with a 5-1 victory. H. Williams (2), Meghan Appleton and the returning E. Goodwin (2) all getting their names on the score sheet.
Finally the Beavers rounded the days fixtures off nicely with an 8-0 win away at Alderley Edge. Promising results from the Beavers this season means the future is looking good for Southport HC.
In total 31 goals scored, 2 goals conceded. Not a bad weekend for the Green Army.
