Recently, Southport Sea Cadets made an appeal for donations because they needed to purchase two new boats for training on the Marine Lake in Southport. Gordon Ferguson the owner and registered manager of Cherry Tree Lodge on Knowsley Road. Southport decided to lend a hand. Having already planned on having a garden party for the residents, staff and their friends and family, with the most important people being the residents themselves of course, he then decided that all funds raised on the day would be donated to the Sea Cadets. Gordon, (who is my brother) and I have strong views, that if more effort and money was put into organisations for the youth of today, there would certainly be less troubled teenagers and we both hope that other businesses in Southport may like to help also.

In July 2009 a monthly scheme to keep youngsters off the streets was set up by Sefton Council. Sound Waves, was run at Splash World and was very popular. Police Inspector Gary Fairbrother said at the time “Since Sound Waves began we have noticed significantly reduced anti-social behaviour in the town centre, on average 50% when the activities are run.” Of course all these things cost money but they do make a huge difference.

Cherry Tree Lodge garden party and fund raiser was held on the 2nd of June 2012 for the celebration of our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Because   inclement weather the resident’s ‘street party’ was held indoors where staff worked hard to line up and decorate the tables with flags and tasty treats, so the they had a great day and celebrated in a very grand style.
Outdoors the party continued with, raffle, auction sale, cake stall, drinks, hotdogs and so on. The Commander of Southport Sea Cadets, Mr Tim Petford and his colleague Kirsty Rothwell were in attendance.

Funds raised on the day amounted to £676. The money will be presented to the Sea Cadets on a date still to be arranged. It is hoped that some of the cadets will visit the home on the presentation day and chat to the residents. This has very much been a case of the older generation giving a helping hand to the young.

Gordon wishes to thank all the people who gave their support for this event including his management, staff, residents, their relations, his suppliers who donated prizes and also many residents of Sandown Court Flats who bought a large amount of raffle tickets and gave gifts and donations.
