National League leaders Cheltenham brushed Southport aside with a convincing victory at Haig Avenue.

Gary Johnson’s side were three goals to the good by half-time thanks to Harry Pell and a brace from Billy Waters.

Pell’s free-kick went in from 25 yards before Waters beat a number of players to double the lead soon after.

His second goal came from a corner before Daniel Parslow rounded off the scoring after the break when he got on the end of Jack Munn’s dangerous cross.

Despite the win, Cheltenham remain only one point clear at the top of the table, with Gloucestershire rivals Forest Green victorious at home against Dover.

Johnson on Southport v Cheltenham

“You’ve got to be happy with 4-0 away from home and we’ve done our job.

“What we didn’t want to do was give them a goal through our poor play.

“It sets up next weekend (against Forest Green) lovely. It’ll take a lot of concentration, good play and energy.

“We can’t let the other teams catch us through
