JOHN CARROLL: Two eagles in first round

By David Birtill

JOHN Carroll chalked up his second Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit victory of the season with an impressive performance in the Pines Trophy at Hillside.

The double Lancashire County champion from Huyton & Prescot was the only player to beat par, an opening two-under 70 featuring eagles at the fifth and 11th holes putting him two strokes ahead of the field at the half-way stage.

The plus three ranked played followed up with 74 to prevail by four shots from Woolton’s Tim Ford.

And he also moved into second place in the order of merit just 10 points behind England international and Red Rose team-mate Paul Kinnear, from Formby.
