Campaign to save surgery gathers pace

18th March 2018

An action group formed to protect the future of essential GP services at Hightown Surgery, have launched a campaign alongside Sefton Council to save it from closure.

Last week, the Champion revealed that NHS Eng- land, the body responsible for finding a provider to operate the practice in Hightown, will close the medical centre on June 8.

In a letter to stakeholders, NHS England said the only party interested in running Hightown has withdrawn and they did not receive any other bids for the contract despite a national advert. Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson labelled the move to shut Hightown GP practice ‘disgraceful’ and vowed to fight the closure.

Now Sefton Council chiefs have revealed that they are strongly opposed to the decision to close it and are calling for it to be reversed.

A special Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting is now scheduled for Thursday, March 22 as Sefton Council believes NHS England has not followed the right process or engaged with the public properly about the closure.
