On Monday 4th August in the Community Event Space in Kings Gardens (In Front of the Royal Clifton Hotel) The Royal British Legion Byng House will be holding a “Lights Out” Event.

We will be marking out the words WW1 in Poppies on the grass and will have a Royal British Legion marque in the event space from 1pm inviting members of the public to fill the space inside the words of WW1 with a Poppy Cross, which will be available for a donation.

We will also have our WW1 Book of Commemoration which any member of the public can come and make a comment in.

Byng House staff will be on hand to give advice and information to Active Service Personal and Veterans who would like more information on our Poppy Break Service .

As part of the “Lights Out” Event, we will be inviting members of the public to come along and prior to 10pm to light and lay their candle as part of the event. (Which can be purchased from Marks & Spencers).

The Mayor of Sefton, Councillor Kevin Cluskey will be in attendance and at 10pm will light a candle and lay it down at the foot of our WW1 words.

At 10pm the Royal British Legion Southport Branch Piper will play “Lights Out” to signify the start of the lights out period until 11pm where it will be played again to signify the end of the commemorative period of reflection.

The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.

Sir Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary, uttered these words on the eve of Britain officially entered the First World War. Exactly 100 years later we are inviting millions of individuals, households and companies to join together in a national moment of reflection

We’re encouraging everyone in the UK to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August 2014 – leaving only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope.

A limited edition Centenary candle is available from M&S stores or online for £4, with all profit coming to The Royal British Legion.

We hope to light one million candles across the UK to remember each and every one of those Service men and women who gave their lives in the war to end all wars. Please join together with us to create a unique national moment for the United Kingdom and The Royal British Legion.
