Former Southport MP, John Pugh said: “This was a gut wrenching loss that did not reflect on our candidate or our local campaign but was largely brought about by the surprising national rise in Corbynmania”.

“The old truth still holds though that in our crazy voting system if you vote Red in Southport, you usually get Blue and Mrs May will be glad that she has this extra seat of Southport. She’d be sunk without it”.

“I’d expect our new Tory MP to be sending the Labour candidate a big thank you card and a bunch of flowers”.

“We, Liberal Democrats need to have the humility to learn a few lessons but I genuinely believe that only the Liberal Democrats have the breadth of appeal necessary to win this seat back off the Tories and that’s exactly what we intend to do, starting tomorrow”.
