Police can confirm that a man has been arrested following an incident in Southport last night.
At around 5.45pm on Thursday 2 September, we received a report of a concern for safety from North West Ambulance Service about a man inside a flat on Avondale Road.
It was reported that the man, aged in his 30s, was acting erratically and making threats.
Emergency services attended the address, a cordon was put in place outside the building and other residents inside the flats were evacuated as a precaution.
The man continued to act aggressively and at one point walked out of his flat and into the communal area of the building in possession of a large kitchen knife.
Officers were able to bring the incident to a safe conclusion by forcing entry into the flat and they made an arrest.
A 31-year-old man from Southport was arrested on suspicion of affray. He has been taken to hospital to be checked over where he remains under the supervision of officers.
Superintendent Col Rooney said: “I want to commend the officers who were involved after they were faced with an incredibly challenging incident.
“Thanks to their decisive and brave actions, the suspect was detained and no one was harmed. Our officers were able to protect both residents and paramedics who attended the flat.
“I would also like to thank residents who were asked to leave their flat while we dealt with the individual. Your patience was appreciated while officers brought the incident to a safe conclusion.”
