Boffins behind the Southport Development Framework want create ‘click and collect hubs’

Eager to try and capatalise on the growth in online shopping, boffins behind the Southport Development Framework say that it is vital to try and incorporate digital aspects to the Southport shopping scene.

A line in the report reads: “It is vital that Southport begins to take steps through the Framework and the Southport BID action plan to incorporate digital technologies in the town centre experience.”

The SDF report goes on to suggest creating special ‘click and collect hubs’, mobile apps designed specifically for independent stores and a new scheme called ‘cloud tagging’ which allows customers to scan items in and around Southport which would then create a digital shopping list for them to use in an online store.

This would take away the physical act of shopping in a town centre store, instead turning it into something akin to a showroom instead.

Although the concepts are still very much in the suggestion stage and no firm plans have been made, OTSNews.co.uk understands that this idea is one of many being seriously considered as a way of rejuvenating an ailing town centre.

New advances in technology such as the increased popularity and availability in virtual reality are expected to play an huge role in turning Southport into a digital shopping hub.

The Southport Development Framework states: “Virtual reality platforms are one such idea. Stores such as B&Q have already introduced technology which allows customers to virtually plan their renovation project in-store and online.

“Items can then be transferred in-store so customers are able to buy the products needed.

“The use of the smartphone is becoming more popular than laptops – retailer apps created for local businesses allow customers to shop on the go or from wherever they are so purchases can be made 24/7.

“Beacon technology would allow shops to capitalise on phone user’s bluetooth service whereby they can then transmit messages to customers in the area to their smartphones informing them of offers, vouchers and information on products sold within their businesses.

“Cloud tagging allows a customer to potentially create a online shopping list while in store!

“Customers are able to scan products and email themselves a shopping list which they can then make purchases through online.

“In effect the physical store acts as a showroom and allows shoppers the option of shopping across multiple channels.

“Only recently Sainsbury’s has launched a ‘shop and go’ service that will allow customers to complete their entire in-store shopping trip using their mobile phone.”
