The Bishop of Liverpool, the Right Reverend James Jones was in Southport today (Thursday 8th November 2012). He officially opened a new school extension at Bishop David Sheppard School in Devonshire road, Southport.

Bishop David Sheppard is a Church of England (Voluntary Aided) Primary School which opened in September 1989 offering primary education to children aged 3-11. In 2008, the Children’s Centre opened. This was a welcome addition to our school, serving the needs of children aged 0-5 and their families.

St. Simon and St. Judes Church plays an important role in the life of our school. Through its influence, the values of the Christian faith are explicitly promoted; we believe these values are reflected in the ethos of the school. School services take place there during the year at Harvest, Christmas, Easter and the end of the school year. Parents and parishioners are always welcome to attend on these occasions.

Bishop David Sheppard lies in a pleasant setting on the edge of Southport and is bordered by open fields including Southport Old Links golf club. The school is set in magnificent grounds which we continually develop for outdoor learning. Our extensive fields at the rear of the school lends a rural atmosphere to the buildings. Our recently refurbished facilities and significant investment in learning resources makes us a school well positioned to educate and care for children in the 21st Century.

The school is of a modern design comprising of:

•a Foundation Stage Unit – this has been completely refurbished, providing a high quality, spacious environment for 3-5 year olds.
•6 classrooms – the 4 Key Stage 2 (Junior) classrooms have recently had new windows fitted and have been re-carpeted. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards.
•a library – this light, airy area is well-resourced, housing a wide range of good quality books to enhance children’s learning. Our extensive selection of reading scheme books is also housed in this area.
•an ICT suite – with recently purchased computers and interactive whiteboard.
•an intervention room – we successfully run a wide range of intervention programmes to accelerate the progress of children who have fallen behind their peers.
•a multi-purpose hall – with new dining room furniture and which is well-equipped for PE.
•extensive grounds – used to develop pupils’ learning, play and sporting talents and consisting of two playgrounds, a large playing field, a vegetable garden, a pond and an adventure trail.
