Birkdale Village is open for business – despite what signs say

With Liverpool Road in Birkdale Village shut to through traffic due to concerns about falling masonry from the Barclays Bank building, Birkdale Lib Dem councillor Simon Shaw has issued an urgent call for improved signs to tell would-be shoppers that Birkdale Village is open for business.

The road closure is expected to remain in place until Friday, and Cllr Shaw has voiced concerns that some people are being put off visiting the Village because diversion signs at the Crosby Road/St Peters Road junction encourage them to keep away.

Earlier today (Wednesday) he went round the Village with a Council officer identifying where “Businesses open as usual” signs could be placed to reassure prospective shoppers approaching by car

“Apart from the Barclays and Santander Banks, the rest of Birkdale Village is still fully open for business,” points out Cllr Shaw.

“A number of shopkeepers have raised concerns, so I’ve asked the Council to ensure that ‘Businesses open as usual’ signs are placed at appropriate locations as soon as possible – hopefully later today.”

“With the grand total of just two parking spaces taken out of commission there is still plenty of space to park, it’s just that you can’t drive all the way through.”
