Lib Dem councillors representing Birkdale Village are hoping for support in a move to allow shoppers easier parking in future.  This Wednesday’s meeting of the Southport Area Committee is being asked to endorse a relaxation in the current one hour parking limit, to allow shoppers to stay for up to two hours.

Birkdale Ward Councillor Simon Shaw and Dukes Ward Councillor Tony Dawson represent the landward and seaward sides of the railway line in Birkdale Village, and have recently conducted a survey of traders to gauge the level of support for new parking proposals..

Cllr Shaw comments: “We found overwhelming support among traders for a move to 2 hour parking, with nearly 80% in favour.  Birkdale Village has a lot of restaurants, wine bars and coffee shops, as well as a great variety of shops, so it is good news if people have more time to enjoy our thriving Village atmosphere.”

Cllr Dawson adds: “The initiative for this originally came from traders and we have been very happy to give it our backing as local councillors.  Even in these difficult times, Birkdale Village has a real ‘buzz’ about it and it’s important that we make it as attractive as possible to shoppers.”

If the Southport Area Committee agrees the proposal it will then be formally advertised in the local press with a 21 day period for any public objections.
