Bike & Go offers subscribers free Costa coffee and cake to mark Cycle to Work Day

Bike hire scheme Bike & Go is encouraging Southport subscribers to take to two wheels by offering a free regular Costa coffee and a cake to mark Cycle to Work Day on Wednesday, August 15.

Those registered to the scheme in the Liverpool city region can claim their hot drink and choose from a flapjack, lemon drizzle, cookie or chocolate slice on August 15 simply by showing their Bike & Go card to staff at their nearest Mtogo convenience store.

The shops can be found at Southport, Hamilton Square, Liverpool South Parkway, Lime Street Underground, Liverpool Central, Maghull, Moorfields, Moorfields Old Hall Street and Waterloo. With the exception of Waterloo, which doesn’t stock certain products, the gift can be claimed at all Mtogos.

Cycle to Work Day is the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event, and sees thousands of enthusiastic riders hit the streets each year to celebrate everyday cycling.

Suzanne Grant, Bike & Go director, said: “From being a greener way to travel, to boosting your own mental and physical health, there are so many reasons why it’s great to cycle to work.

“On Cycle to Work Day, we want to encourage those registered to the scheme to join other supporters of Cycle to Work Day in experiencing the benefits that cycling has to offer, and what better way than by rewarding them with coffee and a cake.”

Research has shown that cycling to work can make a huge difference to people’s health and wellbeing, with David Spiegelhalter, the Winton Professor of Risk at Cambridge University, estimating that, on average, every hour we spend cycling adds an hour to our lives.

It also cuts the risk of cancer and heart disease according to a major study released last year, which found that cycling regularly reduced incidences of cancer by 45% and heart disease by 46%.

And those looking to shed the pounds will be delighted to learn that the average person loses 14lbs in their first year of cycling to work; possibly the most enjoyable way to lose a stone.

Bike & Go bikes are regularly used by commuters who want a healthier, more relaxing way of starting or ending their journey to work. The scheme offers bike hire facilities from 22 participating train stations across the Merseyrail network, including Liverpool Central, Moorfields, Aigburth, Southport, Ormskirk and West Kirby, in addition to a further 49 participating train stations across much of the North West, North East andYorkshire, East and South East of England, and Scotland.

In 2016 the scheme was praised by a UK division of the travel giant TripAdvisor when it was included in a list of the top seven bicycle hire companies drawn up by its subsidiary rental company Holiday Lettings.

To hire a Bike & Go bike, users simply need to register their card details online, which they can do via smart phones, tablets, or at home, and pay the annual £10 subscription fee. They will then receive a user number via email which will allow immediate bike hire – usually charged at just £3.80 per 24 hours up to a maximum of 72 hours – while they wait for their Bike & Go membership card.
