WW1 Centenary visit to France and Belgium September 2014
Banks village, situated just north of Southport, has had a village brass band since their formation in 1875, a tradition that many other English villages have sadly lost. The band performs regularly within the village at various events throughout the year, and also elsewhere in Lancashire and Southport, including Remembrance Day services in Banks and Burscough.
As 2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1, the band has decided to visit the Somme in France, and Ypres salient in Belgium.
The purpose of the visit, is to commemorate the lives of the 19 men who are named on the memorial in St Stephen’s churchyard in Banks Services will be conducted at the Thiepval memorial to the missing on the Somme, and also at the Saturday evening service at the Menin Gate, Ypres.
In addition, services will also take place at one cemetery in France and, time permitting, four in Belgium, where the soldiers named on our memorial are buried.
The 27 members of the band will leave by coach for France early on Friday 26th September returning on Monday 29th September, and will be accompanied by 28 of their supporters.
If anyone has relatives who are buried or commemorated in the following places where the band will visit, we will be only too pleased to leave a small, wooden, British Legion style cross on your behalf.
