POSTER TO POSTER – Railway Journeys in Art
Richard Furness was at Broadhursts today, Saturday the 1st of November from
12 o’clock to 3pm signing copies of his “Poster To Poster Railway Journeys in Art”
books .Vol 6 “The British North West” includes some wonderful posters of Southport.
Richard will also bring some original posters from his collection to display in the shop.
Award-winning author Dr Richard Furness signed copies of his book on railway posters of the British North-west at Broadhurst’s bookshop in Southport on 1st November. The foreword on this book was written by BAFTA fellow and TV personality Michael Palin and the work featured in the BBC’s Books of the Year 2013 review in December 2013.
Southport was (and still is) a favoured destination to take in the sea air, so the railways issued numerous posters during the 20th century to encourage people to visit. Richard’s book features all the classic Southport images and at the book signing some original posters will be on display. The book is volume 6 of a series that takes railway journeys around Britain in art – literally travelling from ‘Poster to Poster’ – the brand name of the series. Contributors to other volumes in the series have been Michael Portillo, Pete Waterman, Paul Atterbury and Sir William McAlpine. Richard’s wife Judi will accompany him and it is most fitting that the foreword on his latest work (The Glorious South-west) was written by – yes, TV’s Richard & Judy!
The book is awash with colour, romance and nostalgia, and was described by BBC literary correspondent Nick Higham as ‘the perfect coffee table book’. It is a glorious mixture of art, travel, history and geography and shows the importance of the railways to Southport and the Lancashire Coast. Since the book was published in July 2013, sales have been extraordinary for a definitive book, and it will soon go out of print. Volume 2 (Yorkshire and the North-East) is already out of print and when copies of this do appear they change hands on the Internet for hundreds of pounds. The books have become THE guide to railway art, so this book signing is a rare opportunity to see Britain’s rich artistic past.
