Sand lizards are a highly protected UK species. Southport’s coastal dune area is one of their last established strongholds. Sadly, a great deal of their vital habitat has been lost due to human inroads and developments. Somehow, they still do manage to survive with difficulty in small colonies. Sand Lizards are one of the UK’s rarest reptile species. Because of  dramatic habitat loss they now only naturally occur on sandy heathland in Surrey, Dorset and Hampshire and within our coastal sand dune in Merseyside. Yesterday, Southport Auto Centre held their annual fundraising Open Day, to help raise much needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support & Southport Offshore Rescue Trust. Parts of the UK are officially experiencing a heatwave as temperatures continue to fluctuate around 30C. Ainsdale Beach was no exception today, with sun lovers soaking up the June heat. However, Ainsdale’s Pontins Holiday Camp appeared to be rather quiet this afternoon, with one ‘uninvited’ visitor seeking shelter in the camp – away from the sweltering sand dunes.
