Art For Macmillan Cancer Support’s Saturday demonstrations in Cambridge Walks, the location of  it’s fundraising gallery, has featured artists working in a wide range of materials. Annette Bailey who hails from Tralee in County Kerry on the South West Coast of Ireland has lived in Southport for thirty years and specialises in painting on fabrics, especially silk. Her work is powerfully representative of existence and features explorations of it’s constituent factors including interaction between humanity and nature.

ots-news-artistWhen asked why she has chosen fabrics as a medium upon which to express her sense of life, she replied: “I see the fibres in cloth as the basic elements from which our world is constructed. All organisms: the tissue of our planet and ourselves are fibrous structures.”

She also explained that the soft, tactile texture of certain fabrics, in particular silk make them a pleasure to paint on. Painting on silk is similar to using watercolours which she has always enjoyed.

artist-campbridge-southport-I find Annette’s method of painting on silk from the preparation stages to the paint “bleeding” into the cloth resulting in vibrant and translucent images and forms, fascinating. Her painting demonstrations are of crucial importance within Southport’s Art Community calendar: her next appearance in Cambridge Walks will be on Saturday 7th November. She will be joined by Daniel Adler who will be working on his symmetrical perception challenging compositions.
