Residents fed–up of being subjected to a constant barrage of noise from fireworks have turned to a ‘fireworks abatement’ petition in a bid to ease their suffering.

Ella Guiney from Crossens is one of a number of residents across the borough backing a national petition to force the government’s hand to further restrict the use of fireworks after claiming she has had to put up with nights of continuous noise from them.

Speaking on the subject in the media previously, Ella said: “There is an online petition with thousands signatures on it and we are asking that the government restrict the use of fireworks.

“I would also point out that fireworks do not only affect animals but also ex service personnel with post traumatic stress disorder, the mentally ill, people with autism, new born babies and the elderly.”

The petition before the government, which needs at least 100,000 signatures before it triggers a debate in parliament, has been signed by more than 8,000 people so far.

The petition states: “Fireworks cause alarm, distress and anxiety to many people and animals. We call on the Secretary of State to make appropriate provision to secure that the risk of public use is the MINIMUM that is compatible with fireworks being used, as stated in Fireworks Act 2003 sect 2.
