Ambulance service reveals week of bizarre calls

29th July 2021

Paramedics in the region say they have been barraged by dozens of 999 calls for bizarre injuries and ailments.

In some cases emergency call-handlers were forced to listen as would-be patients asked for ambulance support for sunburn, a toothache and even a cut to a toe.

North West Ambulance Service is asking that local residents only call for an ambulance in a true emergency.

These baffling and minor injury calls mean that vital time is being wasted when operators could be giving life saving support to those who actually need it.

A spokesperson for NWAS said: “Last week we received calls for sunburn, toothaches and a cut toe! These minor health concerns could all be treated with self-care or a trip to your pharmacy. Talk about ways to fail.

“As our teams continue to work hard under exceptional demand, please ask yourself do you really need our help?

“We are here for those whose lives are at risk or those who are seriously ill or injured; please don’t block the lines for the people who need us most.”
