All About Malmö in Sweden, The Next Eurovision Host City

20th September 2023

Eurovision fans from Southport and Liverpool were spoiled rotten in 2023 when the latter hosted the contest for the first time. But since Sweden walked away as the winner, they’ll have to travel a bit further in 2024: to Malmö, the country’s third-largest city.

Traveling between Sweden and Liverpool will look a little different next year, however, as our Scandinavian friends will need to meet the ETA UK requirements from Sweden to come here. And, we, in turn, will likely need an ETIAS to travel to Malmö, as this European travel authorization is due to be implemented in 2024.

Aside from this minor inconvenience, there are plenty of reasons to visit Malmö in 2024 to witness the flamboyant event in person. So, let’s take a look at the main draws of the city, how to get there, and what to expect from Eurovision in Malmö.

Top Attractions in Malmö

Malmö has had an impressive transformation over the centuries. Initially a fortified ferry berth, it blossomed into an industrial hub in the 18th century. Nowadays, historic architecture co-exists harmoniously with modern structures such as the Turning Torso.

Scandinavia’s tallest building, this structure is a must-visit. Aside from its unique look, it also offers breathtaking views of the city and the Öresund Bridge that connects Sweden to Denmark.

Other major attractions include:

  • Malmö Castle – A historic fortress which houses several museums that offer a deep dive into Swedish history and culture.

Sweden’s History With Eurovision

Sweden has a rich history with the Eurovision Song Contest, consistently boasting high Eurovision Rankings. They also have a total of 7 wins, the first being in 1974 with the iconic ABBA song “Waterloo”.

Their other victories include:

  • 1984 – Herreys, “Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley”
  • 1991: Carola, “Fångad av en stormvind”
  • 1999: Charlotte Nilsson, “Take Me to Your Heaven”
  • 2012: Loreen, “Euphoria”
  • 2015: Måns Zelmerlöw, “Heroes”

And last, but not least, the country’s win last year in Liverpool. Not only did it nab Sweden’s 7th Eurovision trophy, but the song “Tattoo” made Loreen the first-ever woman to win the contest twice.

The contest has shaped the Swedish music scene for years, taking local talent and turning them into international stars. As a result, the nation is eagerly awaiting hosting the 2024 event, which promises a celebration of music and culture that showcases the country’s spirit of innovation.

And who knows, we might even see another UK Eurovision candidate from Southport pop up at the event!
