An injury-time goal from Steven Tames denied Alfreton Town their first win of the new Blue Square Bet Premier season following a 3-3 draw against Southport on Tuesday.

The Impact Arena encounter got off to a flying start, with Paul Clayton heading home the club’s first goal of the campaign after just six minutes of play.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, though, the Yellows were back on level terms, Shaun Whalley equalising with a well taken low drive into the bottom corner of Phil Barnes’ goal.

The second-half proved even more action-packed than the first, and Nicky Law’s men regained the lead on 61 minutes thanks to a Ben Tomlinson penalty after Chris Lever had handled inside the area.

However, the Sandgrounders again drew themselves level just seven minutes later, Chris Almond getting his name on the score-sheet.

Clayton looked to have won it for the hosts with five minutes remaining after heading home his second of the game, but Tames popped up in the dying moments with a header of his own to rescue his side a point.

Alfreton bookings: Franks, Streete, Clayton.

Southport bookings: Akrigg, Grand.
