Part of Formby Bypass is closed in the northbound direction between Liverpool Road and Altcar Road.
The closure is a result of a serious road traffic collision which has occurred in the last hour at the pedestrian crossing near to Tesco supermarket.
An air ambulance has rushed to the scene landing in a residential area of Formby just before 2:45pm.
Traffic is being diverted and the southbound lane remains open at this time however severe delays are expected to continue throughout the afternoon.
Southbound traffic is also impacted by an unrelated four car shunt at the same junction
Further updates will be provided shortly.
