A historic insight: The most popular British sports and how they originated

    By Sophie Kreimer4th April 2022

Football may be the most popular sport in Britain and Europe, but football is not the only British sport that attracts attention across the world. Here are a few examples of sports that have originated in Britain.

Britain has certainly made its contribution to the world when it comes to sport, but how did football, cricket, and other British sports first make their introduction into the world?

    Football

It is impossible to talk about British sports without mentioning the world’s favorite sport: Football. This sport is perhaps the most popular in Europe, attracting millions of fans worldwide. Modern football is one of the many sports that originated in England in the 19th century. Since the medieval period, people had been playing folk football, but there were no common rules, not until the Football Association (FA) was founded in England in 1863, codifying the rules and hosting competitions. If you are interested in the origins of football, there is a Netflix series about the FA and the beginning of modern football in England.

    Rugby

Rugby is said to have originated at Rugby School in England in 1823 during a game of football, when the boy William Webb Ellis ran to the goal of the other team while holding the ball, thereby breaking the no-hands rule of football. Although Ellis is presumed to have been the first person to do this, it took a while before Rugby became a sport. It wasn’t until the year 1846 the rules of Rugby were established at the Rugby school. Since then, the sport has grown into two different forms, Rugby League and Rugby Union, with differing rules.

    Cricket

Cricket is known as England’s national summer sport, but the sport is also played in Australia, Pakistan, India, the West Indies, and the British Isles. Cricket is a very old game. It is believed to have been invented in the 13th century. However, the first known rules of cricket were written in 1744, the same year a famous match between Kent and All-England took place in London. Betting was very common at cricket matches, a tendency that is still happening today. Now, however, you have a chance of preparing yourself before you place your bet. Check out the tips at Betting GB and place a bet on a cricket match or another British sport.

    Tennis

It is difficult to say how tennis came about. The game has likely been played many years before its official beginning. However, the game of Tennis is believed to have been first introduced by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield in 1873. He published the first book of rules and patented the game in 1874. Since then, the sport has grown very popular, especially when Wimbledon became the host of a tennis championship in 1877 that made the sport so popular that tennis is now very much associated with Wimbledon.
