5 Tips for Using Intraday Screener for Beginners

    By John Hall23rd June 2025

For many retail investors, intraday trading can feel thrilling but often overwhelming. So, what is the key to staying ahead? A good stock market scanner that helps you quickly spot opportunities.

An intraday screener helps you filter stocks based on volume, price movement, volatility, and other technical indicators, all in real-time.

If you are just getting started with the markets, relax; everyone begins somewhere. Here are five beginner-friendly tips to help you use an intraday screener effectively and responsibly.

    1. Know What You’re Looking For

Before jumping into any screener, take half a minute to decide on your goal. Are you going after high-momentum stocks? Reversal candidates? Breakout setups?

An intraday screener can throw dozens of potential trades at you, but unless you know your criteria, it is like walking into a buffet without a plate.

    Common filters for beginners include:

    ●        Volume surge (today’s volume vs average volume)

    ●        Price breakout (above day’s high or key resistance)

    ●        Intraday RSI (to find overbought/oversold stocks)

    ●        Gap up/down openers

Simply put, set your filters based on your trading style. If you are a momentum chaser, look for volume and price spikes. If you prefer reversals, watch for RSI extremes and sudden drops with support levels close by.

    2. Keep It Simple

New traders often go all in, stacking 10 filters and then wondering why no stocks show up. A good thumb rule one can follow: start with 2–3 basic parameters.

    For instance,

    ●        Price change is greater than 2%

    ●        Volume is at least 1.5x the 10-day average

    ●        The current price is above the 50-day EMA

That’s it. Let the stock scanner bring up the list. In general, the more trades you screen, the better you will understand what actually works for you.

    3. Use Real-Time Data Only

Intraday trading is about timing. A one-minute delay can be the difference between a profit and a costly exit. Always use a screener with real-time data, especially during the opening and closing hours, as volatility is at its peak during these times.

Many free screeners available in the market offer delayed data, which is fine for end-of-day analysis but not for intraday positions.

If you are serious about trading, consider paid versions or brokerage platforms with built-in screeners. Quite often, they provide accurate, live updates.

    4. Validate With a Chart Before Acting

So, your intraday screener highlights a promising stock. Should you jump in right away? Probably not.

Always check the chart first. Look at:

    ●        Support/resistance levels

    ●        Volume confirmation

    ●        Candle patterns

    ●        Market sentiment and sector movement

This helps you confirm the position before entering or exiting.

    5. Don’t Skip the Post-Market Review

This is where casual interest ends and serious trading begins.

At the end of the trading day, revisit the stocks that showed up in your screener. Did they move as expected? If not, what was off: your filter, timing, or overall market trend?

This self-check will improve your screening ability and sharpen your instincts. Over time, you will know exactly which settings bring you consistent opportunities. It helps you stay sharp as a trader while keeping the bigger picture in focus.

    Final Thoughts

An intraday screener is like your trading assistant. But like any good assistant, it needs clear-cut instructions.

Start with simple filters. Focus on learning how certain setups behave. And remember, no screener can replace discipline and risk control. Combine the tool with your thinking/strategy, and you will go from guesswork to informed action in no time.
