5 fun things to do in Cambridge

Cambridge is a truly magical city, packed full of history, charm and culture. It’s a great place to visit for a day out, with a whole host of fantastic things to do and see. 

The coronavirus pandemic has meant an extended lockdown period across the country, and currently the government advises everyone to stay home as much as possible, maintain social distancing and work from home if possible. 

While you may not be able to travel currently, you can have a think about places you’d like to visit once it is safe to do so. Here, we check out some fun things to do in Cambridge that will make you want to add it to your bucket list destinations. 

Go punting on the River Cam

One of the most fun and unique activities to do in Cambridge is punting. This was introduced in the city in the early 20th Century and remains popular today – as people take to the water to get a unique view of the city by boat. You can either enjoy chauffeured punting tours or have a go at it yourself, depending how brave you’re feeling! 

Explore the University 

Cambridge is world-famous for its historic university, which was founded all the way back in 1209 making it the fourth oldest in the world. During your trip, take the time to explore the university’s amazing architecture which will not disappoint. The King’s College Chapel has certainly retained its character and charm, with beautiful stained glass and gothic stonework.

Meander around the city

The city centre is small and quaint – making it easy to explore on foot. As you meander through the charming streets, you’ll find a whole host of great shops, cute cafes and quaint restaurants. The market square is a must-see – where you’ll find a range of market stalls selling delicious treats, souvenirs, flowers and more. 

Head to the Fitzwilliam Museum 

The Fitzwilliam Museum is a great place to visit for art and history lovers and is completely free to enter. It houses a collection of world-class artworks, ranging from ancient artefacts and armour, to beautiful ceramics and watercolour paintings. There is also a great selection of learning activities and resources – perfect for those who want to expand their knowledge of the art world.

Discover Milton Country Park 

Milton Country Park is a stunning park located just north of Cambridge and offers visitors a huge variety of things to do and see. You can wander through woodland, learn to paddleboard, do open water swimming, spot wildlife and much more. There are two playgrounds that will keep kids entertained as well as a café if you need some R&R. If you’re heading here from the city centre, you can hop on a train from Cambridge to Cambridge North, use the park and ride, drive or cycle.
