Merseyside Police can confirm three men were arrested in Southport in the early hours of today (Monday, 17 August) on suspicion of the theft of a motor vehicle.

At about 11.30pm patrols came across a car, a silver Ford Focus, in the vicinity of Marine Drive that had previously failed to stop for police. Once again the vehicle failed to stop for the patrol and made off.

Officers, with the assistance of air support, then followed the vehicle as it made its way into Burscough and then back into Southport driving through a number of red lights.

At about 12.20am the vehicle stopped on Leicester Street and all three occupants, three men aged 21, were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. One of the men was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The vehicle was recovered and all three men remain in police custody at the present time.
