Almost £1 million worth of improvements are taking place on a stretch of the M6 near Wigan and St Helens, providing smoother and safer journeys for drivers.
Contractors for Highways England are resurfacing a two-mile stretch of the M6 between junctions 23 and 25, equivalent to the size of seven rugby league pitches.
Over 500 new reflective road studs are also being installed along the route, improving visibility, and road markings are being repainted.
All of the work will be carried out overnight, between 9pm and 5am from Monday to Friday, to keep disruption to a minimum. Some lane and slip road closures will be in place, with drivers able to follow clearly-signed diversions.
Philip Deller, Project Manager at Highways England, said:
“Over 100,000 vehicles use the stretch of the M6 between junctions 23 and 25 every day, so it’s vital the motorway is well maintained.
“We’ll be resurfacing a stretch of motorway covering nearly two miles to remove potholes and provide smoother journeys for drivers. The new reflective road studs should also help to improve visibility.
“All of the work is taking place overnight, when the motorway is at its quietest, so we can keep disruption to a minimum. We’ll also have clearly-signed diversions in place when slip roads are closed.”
The northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads at junction 24 near Ashton-in-Makerfield will be closed overnight on some occasions, along with the southbound entry slip road at junction 25 near Wigan. The scheme is due to be completed in October.
