Popular Churchtown chippy Mr Chips caught fire this evening, Friday 8 July 2016.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was called to Mr Chips this evening following a 999 call at around 6.30pm.

The flats above the chip shop had to be evacuated whilst fire fighters made the scene safe.

Passers-by said they saw ‘loads of smoke’ billowing through the door and from above the shop. It’s lucky no one was seriously injured!”

“The fire was caused due to problems with a fryer.”
