The busy Tulketh Street car park was closed on Monday(Feb 29), with the shutters down at the main entrance and padlocks on the two doors for pedestrians.

Katy Rimmer said: “The car park on Tulketh Street where the gym is taking over has shut down, a member of staff said it will be shut for two months whilst they do it up”

The car park has become a popular facility for shoppers and workers in the town centre, with £1 parking all day on Sundays and a £2.25 all day early bird offer.

The site has been earmarked for a major development, with nearly 70 new jobs set to be created with the opening of a new Sports Direct-owned complex.

Proposals were submitted for a Sports Direct gym, Sports Direct shop, Flannels retail store and a Mega Value store to Sefton Council for the empty building in the town centre, which Sports Direct says will create in the region of 67 jobs.

The Sports Direct gym will comprise of an aerobatic and spinning studio for exercise glasses, and will create “in the region of” 17 jobs.
