With Labour-controlled Sefton Council currently considering building of thousands of houses on Green Belt land, a major speech last week by Labour Leader Ed Miliband has confirmed the intention to build many more houses.

Less than two weeks ago the Council’s Overview & Scrutiny Committee agreed to endorse the controversial Local Plan 2015-2030 “Preferred Option Document” by the narrowest of margins.  Labour councillors outvoted Lib Dems and Conservatives by 5 votes to 4.

Now, in a keynote speech given on 6 June, Labour leader Ed Miliband has revealed his plans for building lots more houses in all parts of the country.

Claiming that Britain is not putting up enough new houses, Ed Miliband said that the building of homes would be a high priority for a future Labour Government.

More worrying, for those seeking to preserve Sefton’s Green Belt, he said “We will need every local authority in Britain to be part of this effort.”

With Labour currently ahead in national opinion polls and a general election due in 2015, local residents are worried that the Sefton Local Plan 2015-2030 will mean a Labour Party-sanctioned Green Belt building bonanza.
