The National Police Air Service helicopter in an unusual situation landed on the tide line on Southport beach on Saturday evening to assist the Southport Rescue crew in trying to stop a vulnerable man swimming to Blackpool.

Two officers got out of the helicopter and detained the man till he could be taken back to shore.

 

Massive rescue operation on Southport beach after drunk attempts to walk to Blackpool

Debi Wilson was at the scene, she said: “At 7.30pm we noticed somebody staggering and falling on the beach to the right of the pier and phoned police/coastguard – Heading in the direction of Blackpool.”

“Rescue services arrived…. 2 quad bikes went out and got stuck.”

“The man became abusive then walked off looked like he was heading to Ireland! Helicopter came out and lifeboat – Man apprehended.”
