SWANS DON’T SHOP IN SUPERMARKETS! (Southport) March 10th, 2014 admin Latest News Shares Comments SWANS DON’T SHOP IN SUPERMARKETS! Transition Southport are delighted to report the support they are receiving from local supermarkets for their Swans Don’t Shop! campaign to reduce plastic carrier bag consumption. Last week, Morrisons donated half a dozen sewing shears to the campaign, and provided space for a stall where volunteers cut out donated fabric and gave away free ‘morsbags’ and kits to make your own bags. A Girl Guide Leader enthusiastically took a morsbag to show to her guides as a interesting future activity and shoppers also stopped to enquire about the bedding mats for homeless people being crocheted from waste plastic bags. “ It looks like we had an unintended effect as Bag Police”, said a Transition Southport spokesperson. “One young lady came through the till and put the bottle she had bought into a free plastic bag. She then spotted our Swans Don’t Shop! stall, swiftly removed the bottle from the plastic bag and put it in her rucksack. We just need another several thousand shoppers to follow her example!” Left to right: Asda Community Champion Sharon Gregory Wareing, Transition Southport Chair Linda Simans, Ainsdale Lions Charity Shop Volunteer Emma Irving with some of the donated textiles. Asda have also been providing Swans Don’t Shop! with space for bag-making workshops, and the next one will be from 7.15 PM to 9.45 PM on Wednesday 12 March in their Community Room. If you would like to come along, please report to Customer Services on arrival. Asda have also purchased a generous quantity of textiles from Ainsdale Lions Charity Shop to donate to the campaign. Transition Southport are asking local traders to support the campaign by downloading and displaying their poster, which includes a message to support our local traders.
