Sports team from Galloway’s Society for the Blind go for gold!

A team of acoustic shooters from a Galloway’s Society for the Blind walked away with a raft of medals after competing in a national contest.

Galloway’s Society for the Blind, based on Wright Street in Southport, sent its top visually impaired acoustic shooters to the National Blind and Visually Impaired Championships in Wolverhampton and they walked away with two gold medals along with a silver a bronze and many other pieces of silverware.

The team of 12 battled it out with the country’s elite visually impaired sports people during a two day competition.

Volunteer organiser, Alan Cowie, said: “It’s fantastic to see blind and partially sighted people from all over Lancashire and Sefton putting so much effort into their sport.

“I’m inspired every time I see them, not only because they are great sports people but also because they are so independent and are not letting their sight loss stop them doing what they want to do.

“It’s amazing to see how far they have come since Galloway’s provided this opportunity.”

Acoustic rifle shooting uses sound to help visually impaired people find the target. The Galloway’s team has been formed for nearly four years and has already won some top awards.

Although the team currently meets at Blackburn rifle range to practise, Galloway’s are setting up a second team in Southport who will have their first session at the Waterside Lodge on Friday 21st March. If you suffer with sight loss and are interested in trying your hand at Shooting, please contact Adrian or Carl on 01704 534555.

The team is currently seeking a main sponsor and people to help out at the training sessions. If you can help, contact Janine Bickerstaff, head of fundraising and communications on 07443462372 or by emailing [email protected]
