Southport’s Slick Cupid for Eurovision 2017

Southport local music expert Martin Hovden wants resort rock band Slick Cupid (pictured) to wave the flag for the UK in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

“I spend every Wednesday night on Mighty Southport Radio providing a much-appreciated platform for our very talented bands and musicians – and having watched Eurovision’s two semi-finals and final this week, I can’t help thinking we can do better than that load of old rubbish,” explained the Live Sounds presenter.

“Ukraine’s very weak entry won last night and the UK song by Joe and Jake came very close to the bottom. That is not surprising – it was an awful song and the Europeans don’t like us.

“It’s time for a complete change in approach for our entry next year. Let’s go for a UK act which is edgy, rough round the edges but extremely talented – I’m talking about Southport rock band Slick Cupid. They released their In Control CD recently and it contains four brilliant songs, any one of which could easily have been our entry this year, especially the track Save Me.”

Martin (pictured) added: “Apart from Slick Cupid we have a very rich pool of  talented bands and musicians in Southport and surrounding areas, including Battalia, A Glitch In The System, Dave Aston, Daniel Astles, One Last Run, Deciphered, Rosalene, Hanover, Beyond Recognition, Harrison Eden, Dusky Grey, Lisa Murdoch, James Gordon, Akoosticka, Harry Dickinson, Alexander Pallis, Uncle Gregory, Resistance, Raw Poet, Sean Armstrong, Some Time Today,  Matchstickmen, Stone Horizon, Three Years and Counting, Psychic Robots, Nico Di Biase, Owen Allen, Liam Halsall, Nicola Hardman, Holy Matrimony, Phil Calland (Refaction), Darkstar, and Cameron Maerevoet’s new band (name to be decided).

“Any of them would have done the UK proud. We’ve got to stop playing safe in Eurovision and go for a genuinely talented band or musician. Southport is the place to find next year’s UK entry.”

Martin hosts Live Sounds every Wednesday from 7pm-10pm on Mighty Southport Radio. It brings you the very best music by our local unsigned scene from Southport and beyond.
